A note for Pride month:
It’s 2021 and people still ask me if I perform “gay weddings.” And I still answer them the same way I have since 1987: I perform weddings. I formalize the commitment of people who love each other and want to spend their lives together. That’s it.
It is not my business what their sexual identities or orientations are. It is not my business what their private religious beliefs are. It is not my business what their political affiliations are (although I admit, I do have opinions about this).
It is my business to understand their ceremonial preferences, to help them honor the traditions of their heritages that they choose, and to create a ceremony that reflects their personalities. So, no. I don’t perform “gay weddings.” I perform weddings.
