My Favorite Wedding

Here’s a wedding I didn’t perform. It’s from Bukhara in Central Asia.
From time to time, I’m asked, what was my favorite wedding. Sometimes I think maybe it was the one I did for my next-door-neighbor. Or maybe my first one, my sister’s, 30 years ago this month. Or a lovely outdoor wedding in Ann Arbor where the couple recited the verse from Walt Whitman, “I give you my hand! I give you my love more precious than money. I give you myself before preaching or law. Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?”
And then, I realize, no. None of these can be my favorite wedding, because my favorite wedding is always the one I’m about to perform, the one I’m working with a loving, funny, beautiful couple to make about them and their vision and their love.
